New Jersey's Math-in-CTE Implementation Cited in Philadelphia Inquirer Feature

Ten New Jersey districts' adoption of the Math-in-CTE model was featured in a 6/23/09 article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. In the article, staff writer Rita Giordano describes how Triton Regional High School students used trigonometry concepts, learned through the math embedded in their technology class, to launch rockets and calculate altitude.

Notes Giordano, "New Jersey is looking into expanding its use of Math-in-CTE. While state education officials said it was too early to know if the approach led to higher test scores, math and CTE teachers said they learned from each other, and students developed more math confidence. Locally, the school districts involved in the pilot were Burlington County Vocational, Camden City, Eastern Camden Regional, Cape May Vocational, and, of course, Black Horse Pike."

Center Releases New Report on Community College Access and Affordability

The purpose of this review of community college agency and state legislative websites for all 50 states was to examine what types of initiatives exist to increase access to and affordability of postsecondary education, especially in community college programs that lead to occupational advancement. Common ways of attempting to increase access for nontraditional students were (1) evening and weekend course schedules, (2) distance learning, and (3) awareness campaigns about college and the availability of financial aid. Regarding affordability, states were expanding existing financial aid programs as well as creating new ones that target nontraditional students. States were also targeting specific occupational fields for aid in order to develop the workforce needed in that state. The report's authors are Marisa Castellano and Laura T. Overman of the NRCCTE.
